Houston Heights Living

Houston Heights was developed on the strength of one man’s vision for the city of the future. Oscar Martin Carter believed that a city didn’t have to separate the rich from the poor, but that a proper community would serve the health, safety and employment needs of businessmen and the working class alike. In the 1880s, Carter chose Houston Heights to act on this dream. After garnering investor support, he began developing the infrastructure for the city.

Carter’s project was a success. Houston Heights was quickly established as an alternative to the crowded, turn-of-the-century Downtown Houston. The Heights was an independent city for 25 years, until it was annexed by Houston in 1918.

Over time, Houston Heights developed into a complete community. Today’s residents are passionate about their history and local culture. The city and its businesses are celebrated each month with the Historic Heights First Saturday Sale; other, seasonal community events bring locals together in an organized fashion several times a year. Community groups include the Houston Heights Woman’s Club, the Greater Heights Education Project, Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and the Houston Heights Restoration/Historic Committee.

Free-time activities available in Houston Heights vary. Strolling through local shops, participating in recreational sports leagues, enjoying live folk music, or watching a performance at HITS’ art-deco theatre are just a few options. Five community parks provide playgrounds, walking trails, benches, open space and sports facilities. The community center is located at Milroy Park while the public swimming pool is in Love Park.

Houston Heights’ neighboring Inner Loop communities include Bellaire, River Oaks, Downtown, Rice Military, Garden Oaks, Montrose and Timbergrove.
